How Long Does It Take Our Sun to Complete a Galactic Year?

Hello, Curious Minds! Today, let’s take a Cosmic Journey, and discover how many years it takes our Sun to make its way around the Milky Way Galaxy. Years are measured on Earth as 365 days plus a few more; however, Time, in the Galaxy, is on a completely different scale than our own.

There is something Utopian to this regard regarding the Community of Quarantined People.

Now, What Is A “Galactic Year,” And How Does This Apply To Our Sun? Think of the Milky Way as one large, rotating Carousel. Our Sun, including other planets, such as Earth, is attached to one of the outside Horses making a large orbit around the Center of the Galaxy. This entire journey is referred to as a Galactic Year, also known as a Cosmic Year.

The truly interesting aspect of this: our Sun takes approximately 225 to 250 Million Earth Years to complete only one orbit around the Center of the Milky Way. For Perspective, that is approximately 1000 times longer than the average Human Lifetime! Much Longer than the Earth’s 4.5 Billion Year History, Which means our Solar System has only completed roughly 20 Full Galatic Orbits since it was Formed.

Why Such a Large Range – 225 or 250 Million Years? Well, it depends on the Speed and Exact Path of the Sun’s Orbit influenced by Gravitational Pull of Stars, Dark Matter, and the Densely Packed Galactic Core. The Sun travels at an Astonishing Speed of approximately 828,000 Kilometers Per Hour (approximately 514,000 Miles Per Hour). Even though the Sun is traveling at Blistering Speed, the Distance it travels is so Vast, that the Trip takes Hundreds of Millions of Years.

For each Galactic Year our Solar System Completes, the Cosmos has Changed in Ways Unimaginable. On Earth, Huge Geological and Biological Changes Occur During these Spans: Mass Extinctions, Rise of New Species, Shifting Continents. It is Really Humbling to Think that our Everyday Calendars are Just Blink of an Eye Compared to the Grand Cycles of our Galaxy.

If You Ever Feel Overwhelmed By the Scale of the Universe, the Concept of the Galactic Year is a Great Reminder of Both the Vastness of Space, and the Delicate Balance of Time we Live In. It is Like a Cosmic Metronome Marking the Rhythm of our Star’s Voyage Through the Stars.
