Exploring Our Pathway From the Campfire to the Cosmos
Our next exciting trip will take us down one of humanity’s greatest adventure stories: How did our ancestors evolve from tribes gathering near fires to explorers who now travel across vast expanses of the cosmos?
There is something so compelling about examining our entire path of development, isn’t there? It has been an epic journey of imagination, discovery, and a few streaks of that unyielding spirit that pushes us further along our path.
For today, let’s quickly review the major developments that have influenced our civilization and inspired us to extend our reach beyond Earth’s bounds while we reflect on the unique and extraordinary fabric of history that has led us to where we stand today.
Planting Roots: The Emergence of Civilization
Thousands of years ago, our ancestors transitioned from traveling as nomadic hunters and gatherers to establishing communities in rich river valleys. The transition from wandering to settling was much more than a relocation – it marked the beginning of an organized society. Agriculture produced a surplus of food which gave our ancestors the ability to create writing, build cities and create culture. Mesopotamia, often referred to as the “Cradle of Civilization,” is a living example of this giant leap. For the first time in history, humans had developed a system of recording laws, stories, and calculations – small miracles of communication that would continue to influence generations to come.
We should be impressed by how social organization, early trade routes, and rudimentary technologies became intertwined and enabled our ancestors’ primitive societies to transition into complex ones, each with their own cultures (i.e., mythology, language and deities) that continue to resonate today.
Knowledge-Driven Science & Exploration
Fast forward to the Renaissance/Enlightenment era and curiosity blossomed in ways that have never occurred before. Advances in navigation, printing, and science accelerated human progress. Explorers mapped out new continents, while thinkers such as Galileo and Newton discovered the rules governing our world.
While there were certainly other motivations for the pursuit of knowledge during this time, every new discovery generated new questions, new aspirations, and a growing sense of our presence within the universe. When Copernicus suggested that Earth was not the center of everything, he provided a humbling, innovative view of the universe that ultimately opened the door to the possibility of searching beyond the reaches of our solar system.
To the Edge of Space: Our Journey to the Stars
In the 20th century, the challenge to reach the edge of space went from being purely theoretical to becoming an achievable goal. The competition to explore space among super powers captivated audiences globally — satellites orbiting Earth, humans walking on the moon, and sending back stunning images of nearby planets and distant galaxies.
What is inspiring about this journey is how it exemplifies the collective human spirit and collaboration. From the scientist/engineer, to the astronaut/dreamer, the journey to space is symbolic of both humanity’s desire to comprehend the cosmos and its drive to seek new frontiers for future generations.
Private companies and international organizations are currently working on plans to send manned missions to Mars, establish lunar bases and even consider interstellar travel. The allure of the stars continues to inspire.
