Welcome back to all you curious learners. We’re off today on a new journey through the world of rocks, minerals, crystals, and that elusive term “universal energy.” Whether you believe in this theory or you are skeptical about the potential of a rock to soak up energy from the universe, it will likely trigger your mind and your intuition. Could you please explain what processes occur beneath the Earth’s surface to form these stones?
The ability of stones to absorb universal energy is described in numerous spiritual and metaphysical traditions. Crystals and gems are frequently described as means of channeling or receiving vibrational energy/frequencies from one’s environment—sometimes connected to more remote energies like starlight, celestial influences, and/or other energies found in the universe.
Science, however, takes a completely different stance on this subject. The formation of stones, their chemical makeup, and their physical characteristics—such as piezoelectric effects, which enable pressure to be applied to certain crystal types to generate an electrical charge—are all explained by geology. But scientific evidence does not support the notion that “universal energy” is a measurable form of energy that rocks absorb. As they both study and discuss what we currently know about energy in the universe, physics and metaphysics are always interacting.
There are a couple of reasons why people connect with this relationship. One reason is how rocks feel and how people interact with them. Whether the purpose is meditation, healing ritual, or merely the calmness that a rock provides, many people experience a shift in their emotional state or their perspective after being near a rock or touching/holding a rock. If we view universal energy as an abstract/symbolic concept, the rock becomes a tool of focus/intention for the person interacting with it.
Additionally, there are many cultures that have long revered rocks for their aesthetic qualities and the assumed energy properties associated with those rocks—e.g., the ancient Egyptians believed that lapis lazuli was a stone from heaven, while Tibetan singing bowls were made from metals that resonate at spiritual frequencies.
Piezoelectric Effects: Quartz crystals produce an electric charge due to compression, a characteristic utilized in watches and electronic devices—although this is not an example of the mystical cosmic energy.
Light Absorption: Certain wavelengths of visible light are absorbed by stones, resulting in changes to their color or sparkle—these interactions are physical and represent no absorption of cosmic energy.
Brain Chemistry: The significance and the importance that we assign to rocks may have a profound impact upon our brain chemistry, emotions, and well-being—a phenomenon that is commonly overlooked.
Rather than focusing on whether there is scientific evidence or spiritual validation of the connection between rocks and universal energy, consider using a rock as a personal practice. Choose a rock that draws your attention and/or makes you feel comfortable holding it, and utilize it as a grounding device. Consider your rock as a reminder of your intentions, your position in the vast expanse of the universe, or merely as a source of tangible comfort.
Light a candle, hold your rock, take deep breaths, and allow your thoughts to travel to the cosmos. Whether or not your rock actually captures energy from stars millions of miles away, it may not be as relevant as its ability to assist you in feeling connected — to yourself, to the present, and possibly in some unknown manner, to the universe.
Can rocks capture universal energy? The answer is dependent upon what you define as “universal energy” and where you exist on the continuum of science and spirituality. However, there is little doubt that rocks can stimulate interest and foster a sense of awe regarding our position in the universe.
Thank you for traveling with me on this adventure to explore the possibilities of the connection between rocks and universal energy. In my next blog entry, I will learn about the stories behind many of the world’s most famous crystals and the legends that create their mystique. Until then, continue to look up and remain curious.
Warm regards,
I invite you to join me as we journey through the realms of mystery and meaning.
